It’s almost summer, people. That means days spent lounging on the beach with a frosty drink or in front of the TV with the A/C blasting. But wait — before you start running your cooling system, change the HVAC filter and get a professional tune-up. Your wallet (and your system) will thank you.
1. Locate your HVAC filter. Start by checking your return air intakes — the large air vents on your walls. Open their doors by releasing the clips on top of the frames. If there’s a filter inside, great. If not, don’t give up. Check the unit itself — you’ll find the filter in a slot under, above, or on the intake side of the unit.
2. Get new filters. Don’t forget to measure the ones you already have — all the ones you already have (sometimes different vents have different sizes). Head over to your local store where you’ll find many filters ranging from cheap (usually lasts about a month) to expensive (washable). Aim to get ones with a MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) of 7 to 13.
3. Install the new filters. This is the easiest part — open the return air intake door (if you have one) and slide the old filter out. Put the new filter in, making sure the arrows for “air flow” point inwards (if you install it backwards it won’t filter as well). Check your filter every month and change it again when it’s dirty.
1. HVAC Tune-Ups Prevent Breakdowns. Did you know over 40% of HVAC repairs are preventable? Dirt and debris collect over time and strain the system, meaning rust and other damage. Not good.
2. HVAC Tune-Ups Increase Efficiency. HVAC systems that aren’t properly maintained lose between 5% and 13% of their energy efficiency every year. Be kind to the planet. And your wallet.
3. HVAC Tune-Ups Improve Air Quality. As your machine runs, it collects dust, which circulates around your home, aggravating allergies and other respiratory problems. Do it for your health.
